Where does Reliance Jio source its networking hardware and software?

Last week was crucial for Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio and the global telecommunications industry. The largest telecom firm Jio announced that it’s expanding the partnership with US-based wireless tech firm Qualcomm to develop 5G solutions. Jio’s official statement also said that Qualcomm and Jio have achieved over 1 Gbps (gigabits) on the Jio 5GNR solution using Qualcomm’s 5G RAN Platforms.

The development lays a strong foundation for future gigabit-class networks, which are expected to play an important role in empowering the digital economy in India. The Jio-Qualcomm partnership will enable Reliance Jio to deliver on the company’s vision of digital India. The latest development in the RAN space will pave way for new product launches and innovations by 5G technology.

Jio’s partners include world-scale providers, such as Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, ZTE, and Samsung Electronics. The development in the RAN space is essential for building a BharatNet initiative, which involves setting up high-speed fiber-optic networks across the country to improve internet speeds. Reliance Jio has also acquired an internet service provider (ISP) RCOM for close to ₹5,000 crores as part of its plan to expand its telecom footprint across India.

The company had already acquired assets of Reliance Communications (RCom) in March 2016. It had also acquired Tata Teleservices (TTSL) for an undisclosed sum last October after the latter became sick with debt and loss-making operations.
